GOD FOCUSED PRAYER
“Some… want to taste, to touch with their hearts, to see with their inner eyes the wonder that is God. I want to encourage this mighty longing after God. Complacency is a deadly foe of all religious growth. Acute desire must be present or there will be no manifestation of Christ to His people. He waits to be wanted.” A. W. Tozer
At the heart of the prayer ministry of the Africa Navigators is this ‘mighty longing after God.’ This longing must especially be manifest at the level of the leaders of the ministry. God’s servants easily put God second to other things in their hearts, so a good part of the prayer ministry is aimed at helping leaders cultivate a passion for God alone. This will enable them to better position their individual roles and challenges within the framework of who God is.
To be God focused is of course also a need among those who are led. Irrespective of our given roles, it is critical for us to remain deeply connected with God. For as we live out our calling, our values and our vision (The Core) and as we take our place as ‘insiders’ among the lost, a backlash from the devil will be inevitable. Therefore to keep the right perspective of our challenges and to learn to pray aright, we want to cultivate the primacy of God-focused prayer as part of our ministry culture in the continent.
To this end, the Africa Navigators have held several God focused prayer retreats. The first of these retreats was held in Nigeria in 1996. These retreats, held in diverse settings, have involved worship, prayer, Scripture, silent meditation and supplication. The results have been amazing as God has meet people in ways that they had never experienced before. God focused prayer has now become an integral part of our meetings at the Regional level.
